ABOUT US

The Birkbeck Writers Hub is an interactive web portal which provides a platform for high-quality new writing, a forum for the exchange of ideas, a library of resources for writers and a site for the dissemination of knowledge and good practice from the Birkbeck Writing Programme.

This site is managed by Project Director, Julia Bell, and Managing Editor, Rebecca Rouillard, and maintained and edited by a rotating group of Birkbeck students, alumni and staff.

Birkbeck College was founded in 1823 by George Birkbeck. On the 2nd of December of that year around 2000 people flocked to the Crown and Anchor Tavern on the Strand to witness Dr George Birkbeck and his supporters launch London’s first ever Mechanics’ Institution dedicated to the education of working people.

The college still upholds those ideals today, operating an evening timetable and offering part-time, flexible learning to busy, working professionals.

The Birkbeck Writing Programme follows this ethos by offering writing courses across a broad range of levels and genres and by producing the annual literary magazine The Mechanics’ Institute Review as well as this website.
