Fame versus Genius: Is Literary Celebrity Good for Literary Culture?


Claire Harman teaches Creative Writing at Columbia University. She is the prize-winning biographer of Fanny Burney, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Robert Louis Stevenson; her most recent book is Jane’s Fame: How Jane Austen Conquered the World, a study of Jane Austen’s reputation, fanbase and role in English culture.

 

Toby Litt teaches on Birkbeck’s MA Creative Writing. He was was chosen as one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists in 2003 and is the author of seven novels. His latest novel Journey into Space came out in March 2009.

 

Claire Squires is Professor of Publishing Studies at the University of Stirling and is Director of the Stirling Centre for International Publishing and Communication. Her books and publications include Marketing Literature: The Making of Contemporary Writing in Britain (Palgrave, 2007), books on Philip Pullman and Zadie Smith, and articles on the contemporary literary marketplace, book awards, and children’s publishing.
