Arts Week Hubbub with Elizabeth Fremantle & Christie Watson

Birkbeck Arts Week 2013 will take place on 18 - 24 May. This annual showcase of the varied enterprises of Birkbeck academics in the School of Arts includes lectures, readings, concerts, film screenings, taster courses, performances and panel discussions. The programme of events reflects the liveliness of the teaching and research of Birkbeck’s School of Arts, whose internationally renowned academics address some of the most important issues that affect our society today.

The Arts Week Hubbub will feature readings by Birkbeck students and alumni and they will be joined by special guests Elizabeth Fremantle, MACW alumnus and author of Queen’s Gambit, and Christie Watson, Birkbeck lecturer and author of Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away – winner of the Costa First Novel Award.


Elizabeth Fremantle holds a first in English and an MA in creative Writing from Birkbeck. As a Fashion Editor she has contributed to various publications including Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair and the Erotic Review and has had her fiction published in the Mechanic's Institute Review. Queen's Gambit is her first novel.


Christie Watson trained as a paediatric nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and worked as a nurse, educator and senior sister for over ten years before joining UEA for her MA in Creative Writing, where she won the Malcolm Bradbury Bursary. Her first book, Tiny Sunbirds Far Away, won the Costa First Novel Award. Christie lives in South London with her Nigerian Muslim partner and their large dual heritage, multi-faith family. Christie is a winner of Red's Hot Women Awards 2012.


Hubbub is a reading event showcasing both new writers from Birkbeck’s Creative Writing Courses and established authors. Entrance is free but any donations towards the running of future events would be appreciated. See the Hubbub section for submission guidelines:
